Some days are better than others

Arthur, my dog, gets fed at 8 AM every day, and if you forget even for a minute, you meet that judging gaze of round, grape-like eyes following you from every corner. If another minute passes, fear God, because you will get a nudge with a cold black nose. And if you’re really late… better not think about it.

This morning I woke up a little later, feeling sluggish before a very busy day. I went downstairs and saw all the clues my partner usually leaves for me, the light still on in the kitchen, the box where we defrost the meat sitting open. I completely misread all of it and, thinking Arthur hadn’t been fed, I went ahead and prepared another breakfast for him. And he accepted it with the joy of a creature who has apparently never eaten in his life.

Then my parner came downstairs and, as you know, humans like to talk. So humans talked and discovered that Arthur had already enjoyed his first breakfast. So today he got a double. A small miracle of timing, a lucky slip in the fabric of the morning. The universe sometimes hands out these tiny unexpected gifts, even to dogs.

Now I’m sitting in the kitchen, and Arthur is so happy he has melted on the floor at my feet like a black dishevelled rug. And I’m thinking… some mornings, some days, you just get a double. And it’s worth noticing them when they happen.

This is all I have to say, my friends. Have an amazing day and take it easy for the remainder of the week!
